Young Architect Award 2011 results announced!

On September 22, prizes were ceremonially awarded to the winners of the already 3rd annual round of the competition, at the occasion of the ceremonial meeting of FOR ARCH trade fair exhibitors. The winners took the prizes from the hands of Deputy Minister of Education Eva Bartoňová, Deputy Minister of Culture Anna Matoušková, Rector of Czech Technical University in Prague Václav Havlíček, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Architecture in Liberec Bořek Šípek, jury president Jan Jehlík and jury member Josef Pechar. The competition patron Martin Rajniš also took part in the prize-giving ceremony.

An evaluation of this year’s round

With public space being the topic of this year, one could be rightfully afraid that the concept, quite overly addressed in these days, would be approached only formally by the competitors. It wasn’t. On the contrary, it is apparent that it has become a natural topic and aim of work of students and architects of the current generation. They know what public space is – a consciously designed and physically constructed space with a sovereign architecture. It might feel trivial, but in my opinion, it is quite an essential development, as the previous generations perceived public space more or less as just an area around houses (the cultivated “remainder”) or as in abstract activity (“functional area”). The competition delighted me with one more thing: It seems that the era is over when architecture and urbanism were disciplines bitterly resentful to each other, when the urban planner did not understand the location and the architect did not build the city together with each house. It seems that the young generation does not distinguish at all between these two, that it doesn’t carry the distinction in its cells. And the third joyful fact: As a jury member, I seldom see projects that didn’t turn out well to be a minority. This time it was the case. Congratulations and thanks!
