Architect Award ABF 2009 – Category Studies – School works

Museum of Cuban Refugees, Miami, USA
autor: Martin Kropáč

Jury’s assessment:
Museum's strong solution concept is dominated by main "exhibit" which is an open sea horizon following the urban structure of neighboring seat. A pier representing port as well as bridge leading towards freedom, museum of refugees as a hand offered to the one who is drowning. Clear and legible spatial arrangement. Work with light and sea breaker. Project with a strong inner story.

Architect Award ABF 2009 – Category Studies

Kindergarten on the Wall of the Administration Building of the National Theatre
authors: Martin Prokš, Marek Přikryl

Jury’s assessment:
This project excels with its concentrated and rich invention and although it will be hardly ever realized it brings joy and playfulness to the contemporary creative discourse of Prague's architecture. It relates to a progressive atrium-type kindergarten and develops the concept of modular building. It intelligently softens the heaviness of Práger's New Scene.

Architect Award ABF 2009 – Category Implementations

Tomar Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation Offices Tomar, Portugal
authors: Nuno Griff, Architects Albuquerque Goinhas, Augusto Marcelino, Cristina Mendonca, Luis Baptista, Pedro Patricio, Sofia Antunes

Jury’s assessment:
Completely unconventional reconstruction and conversion of an industrial object situated near the historical part of Portuguese city of Tomar. Original built-in unit from reinforced concrete divides the inner space into the public part - a place for social contacts and meetings (café, exhibitory area) - and the private part containing accommodation facilities for invited artists. These private areas are defined by the embedded reinforced concrete structure and are differentiated in color within the realms of the whole public interior based on the contrast of white matt color and dark epoxy varnish. It is an excellent example of transformation while preserving the trace of the original historical urban structure.

Award of Architect Josef Hlávka – Category Studies

Revitalization of Club Hall in Slavonice
authors: Ing. arch. Štěpán Valouch, Ing. arch. Jiří Opočenský

Jury’s assessment:
The study of a Hall House in Slavonice exceeds the other projects with its civility, sensitivity and quality of design. It tries to offer a serious answer to the fundamental motives of human society in a small town, reasonably reflects the historical context, doesn't want to rebel or provoke. It has the potential to become an instrument of the cultivation of polis, to be a source of joy and recognition. The expression of the house is confident, simple and without any major hesitation.

Jury Award – Category Studies – School works

Living in Tower Building, Prague, Holešovice
autor: Ing. arch. Tomáš Král

Jury’s assessment:
This project answers the question of urban density and rising quality of residential environment - even though high rise buildings are very difficult subject especially when considering historical centers of cities like Prague, this project definitely doesn't lack innovative character and honesty in searching for possible future solutions.

Media Partner Award – Category Studies – School works

Swimming Pool Jenštejn
autor: Michaela Roženská

Jury’s assessment:
Simple building for everyday life sensitively placed in the context of a small village. It uses the advantage of a steep terrain as well as orientation to the quarters. It is calm and almost timeless. This is an example of a creative approach that doesn't need to draw attention all the time.
